The Master's Degree in Translation and Language Services at the University of Porto is a two-year professional course designed in accordance with the guidelines proposed by the Bologna Process. The curriculum takes into account the European Norm EN-15038: European Quality Standard for Translation Services of May 2006 as well as ISO 17100 of 2015, and is the result of the rich experience accumulated over 20 years of teaching Translation within the first degrees in Modern Languages and master’s degrees in Translation with the associated internships in companies both in Portugal and abroad.
The structure of the curriculum and in the content of the subjects taught have greatly benefited from the regular contact maintained with potential employers during and after the internships, as well as from feedback from our graduates and the world of professional translation and related language services.The languages currently included in the curriculum are Portuguese, English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. Since 2012 it has been possible to study Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, providing there are enough students interested.

During the first 2 semesters the study cycle aims to:

  • Develop the students' language skills to a high level;
  • Offer a sound theoretical background in Translation and Intercultural Communication;
  • Offer practical training in the technology needed for professional translation (e.g., SDL/TRADOS, memoQ)  and a general view of the tools and resources available for the translator;
  • Develop skills in the translation of technical and scientific texts and multimedia texts, such as subtitling, web page localization, etc.
  • Develop their skills in their mother tongue and the ability to both revise translation and write originals.

The objective of the study cycle in the 3rd semester is to give further opportunity to develop translation skills and to specialize in areas such as terminology management, localization, legal translation, economic and financial translation and community interpreting.
An internship to be carried out usually during the 4th and last semester gives the students the opportunity to practise translation in a professional environment (professional training). They may also opt for a research project and dissertation (academic training).
